Whorls of large, bright green, conspicuously veined and pleated leaves give rise to tall, branched stems densely covered with small, star-shaped, purple-black flowers in early summer.

Prefers a moisture retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade. Can tolerate sun if grown in reliably moist soils. May become dormant in late summer if hot conditions persist for several weeks. Protect from slugs and snails. May take several years for the plant to reach maturity and flower. CARE: All parts of the plant are poisonous.
