Plant for shade
This interesting plant, useful for shady spots or woodland planting is worth growing on three scores: its unusual creamy-white spathes (flowers); its attractively patterned (pictum=painted) leaves; scarlet fleshy berries arranged spikes. Dies back in summer to reappear in autumn.
Prefers a moist but well-drained soil in full or partial shade. Will tolerate dry shade when established. If berries are not eaten by garden birds, seedlings may be found growing around the base of the parent plant. CARE: TOXIC if ingested.
Height: 12 - 18 inches / 30 - 45cm
Spread: 18 - 24 inches / 45 - 60cm
AGM: The RHS Award of Garden Merit. Plants awarded an AGM are:
- excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions
- of good constitution
- essentially stable in form and colour
- reasonably resistant to pests and diseases
