Plant for a clay soil
Plant for a damp soil
Will self seed
Beautiful nodding heads of bell-shaped flowers appear in spring. Two colour variations exist - one in various shades of pinkish purple which have a distinctive checkerboard pattern and secondly a luminous white form which has a very feint check pattern, like a watermark.
Prefers a moist soil in sun or a drier soil in partial shade. Natives of water meadows they make superb candidates for a bog garden where they will gently self-seed to form small colonies. An extremely hardy variety. Summer dormant.
Height: 8 - 12 inches / 20 - 30cm
AGM: The RHS Award of Garden Merit. Plants awarded an AGM are:
- excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions
- of good constitution
- essentially stable in form and colour
- reasonably resistant to pests and diseases
One of my favourite fritillarias. The flowers are so distinctive and the checkerboard pattern seems such an unreal sight that I always have to tell myself that it's natural. A real favourite in our bog garden and a variety I wouldn't be without just as long as I can provide the right conditions.
