This distictive fern has fronds which form a large, striking and unmistakable shape. It spreads slowly by underground rhizomes which give rise to offsets. These can be removed and potted up or left to form impressive colonies.

Prefers a moist, soil in partial shade out of strong winds.

  • excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions
  • available
  • of good constitution
  • essentially stable in form and colour
  • reasonably resistant to pests and diseases

Lynne's notes:

As you probably realise, I adore plants. If I had to collate a top 40 then this fern would claim one of the places. When well-grown it is truly stunning. Our original plant was bought when we created our bog garden back in 2000 (our Millenium project). In the rich soil it soon formed a lovely colony which became more and more impressive with every passing year. Don't worry if you don't have a  bog garden though, a damp spot in shade will also suit it.
