Low rosettes of large, bronze-green leaves give rise to spikes of rich blue flowers in spring. Loved by bees. A vigorous ground cover plant.

Prefers a moisture retentive but well-drained soil in partial shade or a moist soil in sun.

Height: 8 - 12 inches / 20 - 30cm

Spread: 12 - 24 inches / 30 - 60cm

AGM: The RHS Award of Garden Merit. Plants awarded an AGM are:

  • excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions
  • available
  • of good constitution
  • essentially stable in form and colour
  • reasonably resistant to pests and diseases

Lynne's notes:

Ajuga as a species is often despised as weedy ground cover. This seems very unfair to me. 'Catlin's Giant' is larger than its peers in foliage and flower. When grown well on soil which does not dry out, it forms a stunning mat of glossy, bronze tinted, green foliage. The spikes of rich blue flowers which appear in spring are really lovely.
