  • Flowers attract bees

  • Plant for chalk soil

  • Plant for sun

  • Summer dormant

A handsome, easily grown species. The flowers resemble waxy, drooping bells and are composed of three outer petals which are pale, apple-green and these alternate with three reddish-brown inner petals to give a striped appearance. The open ends of the ‘bells’ curl backwards

Requires a free-draining soil in a hot, sunny position. Try not to disturb once planted, especially when actively growing as if the roots become damaged they will not regrow. Once leaf growth has died back the bulbs may divided but flowering may be affected. It may take a season or more for bulbs to flower again.

Height: 12 - 18 inches / 30 - 45cm

AGM: The RHS Award of Garden Merit. Plants awarded an AGM are:

  • excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions
  • available
  • of good constitution
  • essentially stable in form and colour
  • reasonably resistant to pests and diseases
