Scalloped-edged, green leaves, often with distinct burgundy veining give rise to spikes of fluffy pink tinged, white, starry flowers in spring and early summer. Further small flushes of flowers may appear until mid-autumn. Foliage takes on reddish tints in autumn. Flowers are a magnet for pollinating insects.

Prefers a moist but well-drained soil in full or partial shade.
